Life in the colonies of Australia wasn't easy. A lot of the people were criminals and the land was harsh. Convicts had to do hard work for long hours. They had poor shelter and there wasn't a lot of food. Because of this, many convicts became bushrangers.
In the 1850's, even more people became bushrangers as the gold rush brought many immigrants and riches to the bush. There weren't any banks on the goldfields so people who found gold had to keep it with them. They became targets for bushrangers who preferred stealing to working. Gold was transported to Sydney on coaches. These coaches and miners travelling on lonely roads, were easy to attack. Bushrangers also robbed settlers for food, guns and horses. So bushrangers became feared throughout the gold rush.
